    Photography Final project

Some say Man is but the mold of his homeland, and the place where we have grown up forms and defines our identity. After living in Israel for five years, I returned to Birobidzhan in the far East of Russia, the city where I grew up, for my graduation project. I expected to see again the boring, dismal scenery, the decaying city, the roughness, sadness, and coldness of its citizens. But then, an entirely different encounter happened. In a long process of accumulating photographs in the city, I had realized that for me, home is not a physical territory but an emotional state, and so, the loss and destruction of the physical home do not affect me any longer. Home is in my heart, an inner home disassociated from its physical manifestation. The city with its crumbling streets and buildings, the well- known landscape, have disappeared forever, but I no longer crumble inside.
